Daddy Blog Review: Why Is Daddy Crying?

Daddy Blog Review: Why Is Daddy Crying?

Topics: Dad Blog Review

Wow! It’s already Week #6 of my year-long project to review a Daddy Blog each Sunday. Need confirmation that 2010 is the Year of the Daddy Blogger? This week a group of daddy bloggers met up for a chat online to discuss plans for a collaborative project. I can’t let the cat out of the bag yet, but something tells me a revolution is brewing.

Music is a big deal to this week’s Daddy Blogger so I thought it would be appropriate to write my review of Why Is Daddy Crying while listening to my Pandora radio station of Irish punk bands like Flogging Molly, The Pogues and Dropkick Murphys. I must say that Why Is Daddy Crying is the perfect blog to read while listening to Irish punk. The only thing missing is a nice pint of Guinness. Sadly though, it’s only 10:00 a.m. so I’ll settle for some good coffee.

If you follow @WhyIsDaddyCryin you get the sense he’s a fun-loving, larger than life dad living life balls out (sometimes literally too!). He is the real deal. There’s no hidden agenda, no p.c. wall he hides behind. What you read is what you get. You never know who you’re going to get behind the @ moniker but with @WhyIsDaddyCryin, my sense is this is who he really is. The blog is no different with posts ranging from the dialogue of conversations between himself and “wifey” (which are rip-roaringly hilarious and very similar to conversations I have with my own wifey) to really heartfelt posts showing his own vulnerability after losing his job. Below is a glimpse of some other highlights I found:

“I want to believe in myself once again so I dream of a man whose hopes never end” (Black Friday Rule – Flogging Molly)

Losing your job is like getting kicked in the nuts. You might even see it coming, but it still hurts every time. @WhyIsDaddyCryin made an interesting attempt to get his mind of some heavy duty stress by hanging out with with Pink Ducky. But it’s this self-revealing disclosure that gets to the heart of the matter (from Straddling the Line):

“When I was a kid I told myself I’d never be like my father. When I was 10, I told my brother the same. When I was a teenager, I told my future wife the same tale. When I was in college I wrote endlessly about it. When my first born entered our lives I journaled this continued promise vowing this transformation would never happen. My current situation has me closer to being my father than I could have ever imagined I’d experience.”

“Let’s talk about sex baby” (Salt N’ Pepa)

I was going to title this section, “Having Sex With Kids” but something didn’t sound right about that. There are 12 posts on the blog “tagged” with “sex.” One of the best posts is called, “Gettin Our Spontaneity-On”. What parenting couple hasn’t had this talk? Probably not exactly like this though:

So the wifey and I had “that talk” again. Yeah…that one. The one where I’m all: “We need some spontaneity in our sex life…” And she’s all, “sponta-kiss my ass idiot-boy.”

Ah, the deja-vu and memories make me misty-eyed.

“Captain: Oh! Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Kids: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!” (Theme from Spongebob Squarepants)

So even with all the great laughs and great writing on this blog, the best posts are where @WhyIsDaddyCryin shows the love for his two kids. Take your pick, there’s great stuff all around here about the kids. I liked the list of 25 things learned while being a single, stay at home dad for two weeks:

20)  My son and I became closer than we’ve ever been and it makes me weak in the knees.

21)  All I have to do is look in my daughter’s eyes for a split second, and she’s scrambling to sit next to me…grabbing my arm and laying it around her and across her chest.

Do you doubt it any longer?

Why is Daddy Crying is another fantastic daddy blog. The guy can flat out write and I continue to be blown away by the overall quality and depth to dad blogs. 2010 is indeed “The Year of the Daddy Blogger” and this is another blog lending credence to that. Check it out. After reading it, you’ll be overjoyed enough to try a naked cartwheel. Watch out for Mr. Small-Time though (not to mention Mr. No-Time).

This is a great review. I’ve been watching @WhyIsDaddyCrying tweets for a few weeks now and just this past Friday told him I still couldn’t figure out if he was a funny mofo or a complete jerk. I got a reply:
“@metzgerbusiness haha…I’m a funny mofo with random fits of being a complete jerk! watch your back man! haha” With this response I knew I liked the man. Your review here set it in stone because after all we all have fits of being complete jerks… just ask our wives.

Thanks so much Kevin! I didn’t what to think either until about a month back I started reading the blog. I loved it and knew I had to do a review. I read that tweet as well about the random fits of being a complete jerk – [raising my hand] um…yeah, me too :)
